Rock n Roll Baby!
Have you ever hunted with a close friend and during the laughs, chatting or conversation, something is said that you’ll never forget? Well, this happened with me while hunting turkeys with my good friend Dave Best. Let me tell you how it all came about……
Going back over 15 years, Dave Best attended one of my Rack Stacker Seminars that I was hosting in Orillia, Ontario. I often speak about herd management and food plot installations using land strategically to funnel game animals into a wanted area to harvest them. Dave and I spoke for years about how this benefits a lot of hunters and the joy it brings as you see the bucks grow.
Year over year of discussion and building a relationship with Dave, we became brothers and very close friends. Time gets the best of things and as the saying goes, “we should get out on a hunt together,” yet year over year it never happened.
Living 3 hours apart from each other and both being business owners, it was tough to make it happen. However, we were not going to allow another year to pass without getting out for a turkey hunt, as Dave wanted to show me how his beautiful custom-made turkey calls did with the birds. You see, Dave Best is not only an avid turkey hunter, but he owns Bestwood Carpentry. Dave is very handy with wood, and in what downtime he has, he makes some beautiful turkey calls and sells them prior to every turkey season.
We put it in the calendar that I was to meet at Dave’s place for opening day of turkey. We were after a Tom Gobbler, and we had lots of birds into the decoys at 20 yards the first time out, but we couldn’t make it happen. I scheduled another trip up to try again, and we moved into another property to try again.
I headed home to hunt with my family and was able to take a bird off my own land. While recovering my gobbler, I heard a hen come out of the fenceline revealing a “Hen Turkey Nest.” I set up a Reveal trail camera to see the outcome of the nest until they hatched.
I then returned to Dave’s place before the end of the season to finish off the hunt with him, and we completed the hunt.
